A new study published in the online medical journalDrugs & Therapeuticsfound that valacyclovir and valaciclovir (also known as Valtrex) are effective treatments for the treatment of recurrent herpes labialis (HSV-2).
The study, published on Thursday in the journalN Engl J Med, included 542 women who had been prescribed valacyclovir and valaciclovir for recurrent herpes labialis. The study followed patients for a median of 12.4 months. The results indicate that patients on valacyclovir and valaciclovir are more likely to experience recurrent HSV-2 infections and are also more likely to be prescribed valacyclovir and valaciclovir.
The researchers also found that the combination of valacyclovir and valaciclovir resulted in fewer infections in women than those on a single treatment regimen.
“This is a significant finding,” said lead researcher, PhD student, PhD student, PhD student, MD, and senior author of the study.
The study was conducted at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Austin, and is one of several research-based clinical trials testing the combination of valacyclovir and valaciclovir for HSV-2. “As we continue to study and see the data from the study, we believe that these medications can help to decrease the number of HSV-2 infections in women,” Dr. Thompson said. “In addition, this study also demonstrates the value of using the combination of valacyclovir and valaciclovir in treating recurrent HSV-2 infections.”
According to Dr. Thompson, the study was designed to identify risk factors for recurrent HSV-2 infection, including prior history of HSV-2 infection, the presence of other sexually transmitted diseases, and the presence of underlying medical conditions. The results of the study have not been published.
